Takko
Takko Town, Sannohe County , Aomori Prefecture
Garlic is everywhere in this “garlic town,” from the shape of the streetlight shades to the official car number plate saying “229,” which can be ronounced nin-ni-ku (‘nin-niku’ means ‘garlic’ in Japanese). Despite the lack of famous sightseeing spots or train stations, the town is always bustling with tourists and foreign students. Notably, amidst this busy crowd, the townspeople are always there to welcome travelers with their warm hospitality. If you go for the garlic fields, you are sure to have an unforgettable encounter with the people of Takko Town.
A 30-minute drive from JR Ninohe Station heading west on Route 104 brings you to Takko town. You will know you’re there─the fields, signs, and art objects are all garlic-themed. It is as if the entire town is an amusement park. Why such an emphasis on garlic? I was amazed and overwhelmed at first, and couldn’t stop smiling in the end. Just witnessing this unique branding is reason enough to visit this town.
Located in the southernmost part of Aomori Prefecture, the town of Takko borders Iwate and Akita Prefectures. Although it is a small town with a population of less than 5000, the name “Takko Nin-niku” meaning Garlic of Takko, is well known throughout Japan. Garlic cultivation here has a history of more than 60 years. The origin of the business lies in the search for a cyclical cash crop that could support the town’s economy without relying on migrant workers during the winter months while utilizing manure from the local livestock industry as compost. Recognizing garlic’s potential, the growers pioneered its cultivation and have long played a leading role in promoting garlic cultivation within the prefecture.
As if to back up the mayor's claim that he is pushing to “development a town where the local people shine with joy and make visitors want to come back to see them,” the more I spoke with the locals, the more I was moved by their individual personalities, talents, and deep love for the town. During my time with them, starting from the garlic, I began to sense “other” charms of the town and its culture, history, and nature gradually seeped into me.
The branding of a town is often evenly considered to satisfy each aspect. But it is somewhat understandable why this town’s strategy of focusing solely on garlic has been embraced here.
Gentle yet passionate, with garlic colored summer winds blowing through, the town of Takko opens its door wide for you to take a deep dive. Come and discover its charm with the guidance of the young locals.
